Bolted joints are kept from slipping by the friction created by split washers. They have a split and bent ring with two sharp edges on display. The bolted joint is pressed in the same manner as an unsecured bolt after these washers are placed between the bolt head/nut and the mating surface. The washer flattens down when the nut is tightened, forcing the jagged edges into the mating surface.

About Split Washer
Softwoods work better for locking since it is simpler for the edges to burrow into them. Bolted joints at higher amounts of dynamic stresses cannot be locked by it. Additionally, it is inefficient when the bolted joint needs lubrication since this encourages the bolt to slide and rotate. Helical-shaped split rings are split washers. When two ends are secured together, a spring force is applied to the fastener, increasing friction and impeding motion. The most popular lock washers are helical spring lock washers, which work well in situations with lighter weights. Split washers include high-collar lock washers.
